The annual Rising Stars calf show, an important part of the Aberdeen Christmas Classic that exhibits next year’s show circuit cattle, saw an outstanding showing of Limousin-cross calves. The show was judged by Stuart Hunter, West Carinhill, Culsalmond, Insch.

Achieving the overall champion and open champion heifer titles was an eight-month-old Limousin-cross purchased heifer from W Robertson & Son, Fodderletter Farms, Tomintoul, Ballindalloch. The champion also claimed the open home-bred and purchased heifer title.

A seven-month-old Limousin-cross purchased heifer from Jack Hendry, Heads of Auchinderran, Keith, claimed the young farmers champion and young farmers purchased heifer titles.

In first place for the lightweight open home-bred and purchased heifer class was a Limousin-cross ‘Sassy Lassy’ born in April, exhibited by Blair Duffton, Rebecca Stuart and W Moir, 2 Bogie Street, Huntly.

The lightweight class of open home-bred and purchased bullocks saw an eight-month-old Limousin-cross from Ian Miller, North Lurg, Midmar, Inverurie, take first prize. Yet another Limousin-cross, born in April from Gordon Hendry, Heads of Auchinderran, Keith, was awarded first prize in the open home-bred and purchased bullock heavyweight class.

First prize in the young farmers home-bred and purchased heifer category was a June-born British Blue-cross ‘Madame Mim’ from Mark Robertson, Easter Fodderletter, Tomintoul, Ballindalloch, with an eight-month-old Limousin-cross ‘Jagerbomb’ exhibited by Graeme Rhind, Newton of Struthers Farm, Kinloss, Forres, taking first prize in the young farmers purchased bullock section.

John Angus, Aberdeen & Northern Marts Head of Livestock, said: “There was an excellent showing of quality calves at this year’s Rising Star exhibition show, and we were delighted to see the very deserving W Robertson & Son awarded the champion title. This section of the Christmas Classic is an essential part of the two days of shows and sales, and we look forward to seeing this show continue to grow in the coming years.

“We anticipate that many of the calves exhibited today will excel in the coming show season, and we look forward to seeing how they perform. Thank you to our judge Mr Hunter, main event sponsor Northlink Ferries, and to all our exhibitors and spectators who took part in today’s event.”
