Double win for Blair Duffton and Rebecca Stuart with £5000 top

It was a clean sweep for Blair Duffton and Rebecca Stuart of Huntly and Insch, when they secured the champion and reserve honours in the prime cattle at the Aberdeen Christmas Classic earlier today.

Overall averages saw 34 heifers average 330.9p per kg or £1948.75 and 14 steers level at 278.7p or £1741.67.

Taking the overall honours when tapped out by judges Jamie Chapman of James Chapman Butchers Ltd, Wishaw and Frank Yorke of Yorkes of Dundee Ltd, Dundee, was their May, 2018-born Limousin cross heifer bred by Gordon Cameron, Newton Cottage, Acharacle, Argyll.

Purchased at Thainstone, last October, after it stood champion at the weaned calf sale, she is by Maraiscote Lothario, out of a Limousin cross dam. Weighing 640kg, she sold for the top price of £5000 to Scott Watson, who was buying on behalf of Anthony Kitson of BT Kitson Butchers, Hutton Rudby, Yarm, North Yorkshire.

Next best at £3500 was the Young Farmers’ champion from Thomas Hall, Auchmaliddie Mains, Maud, Peterhead. Selling to Forbes Raeburn Butchers, Huntly, was a 620kg, January, 2018-born Limousin cross heifer named Merida, which was bred by Sinclair, Haquoy, Orkney.

The champion butchers’ animal from Wilson Peters, Cuilt Farmhouse, Monzie, Crieff, made £3100 to Bruce Of The Brough Butchers, Fraserburgh. This was She Za Diamond, a home-bred September, 2018-born British Blue cross heifer weighing 592kg. She is by the British Blue sire Diamond Blue Isambard, out of an Aberdeen-Angus cross dam.

Selling for £3000 was the reserve champion named Gazza from Blair Duffton and Rebecca Stuart. This was a 666kg, March, 2018-born Limousin cross bullock bred by Gary Bell, Haaside, Lockerbie. By Pabalo Mr Muscles, he is out of a Limousin cross dam and sold to the judge Frank Yorke.

Mr Wilson also stood reserve butchers’ champion with a home-bred Limousin cross heifer named The Wee Housewife, which sold for £2500 to David Comrie Butchers, Comrie, Perth. Born in May, 2018, she weighed in at 570kg and is by Anside Hawkeye, out of a Limousin cross dam.

The reserve champion Young Farmers’ animal, a 636kg, June, 2018-born Limousin cross heifer from Moir Livestock, Home Farm, Cairness, Fraserburgh, sold for £2400 to BT Kitson Butchers, Yarm.

Other prize winners included the reserve overall heifer from Michael Robertson, Easter Fodderletter, Tomintoul, Ballindalloch, which later sold for 290p per kg to WTS Forsyth, Peebles. This was a 624kg, February, 2018-born Limousin cross heifer named Prosecco, bred by A MacInnes, Ruaig, Isle of Tiree, and sired by Lodge Hamlet.

Harry Brown, Auchmaliddie Mains, also stood reserve overall bullock champion with a 654kg, January, 2018-born Limousin cross named Fergus, which was bred by Liam Muir, Upper Onston, Orkney. He sold for 330p to BT Kitson Butchers, Yarm.

In the Young Farmers’ unhaltered cattle section, the overall honours went to a March, 2018-born Limousin cross heifer from Cally Harper, Westholme, Turriff. Bred by Sheep Park Farms, Bridge of Marnoch, she weighed in at 588kg and made 310p to Bruce of the Brough.

The reserve Young Farmers’ unhaltered championship was awarded to a Limousin cross heifer weighing 578kg from Thomas Hall, Auchmaliddie Mains. Bred by Harry Brown, Greenacres, Maud, this January, 2018-born heifer sold for 255p to John Scott Meats, Paisley.

James MacIver, Wester Coltfield, Kinloss, Forres, stood champion bullock in the Young Farmers’ haltered section with a home-bred Charolais cross bullock. Weighing 574kg, this October, 2018-born bullock is by Balmyle Logic and sold for 250p to Bruce Of The Brough.

Reserve to James MacIver in the Young Farmers’ haltered cattle was a home-bred, April, 2018-born Charolais cross bullock named Boris from Cameron Hunter, West Cairnhill, Culsalmond, Insch. Bred out of a Limousin cross dam, he sold for 255p to James Chapman Butchers, Wishaw.

Fettes, Hunter and Marshall, West Cairnhill, Culsalmond, Insch, won the best animal sired by an Aberdeen-Angus bull award with a May, 2018-born Aberdeen-Angus cross heifer named Dark Secret. By the AI sire Nightingale Ploughman, she is out of a British Blue dam and weighed in at 558kg. She sold for 370p to WTS Forsyth.

The first animal through the ring from Donald Morrison, Plewlands, Duffus, Elgin, made 380p to Smallburn Farms, Plewlands, Duffus, Elgin. This was a 514kg, April, 2018-born Limousin cross heifer bred by Balfour Baillie, Sebay, Orkney and sired by Ronick Laddie.
