Half Bred Ewe Lambs were off the scale at Quoybrae yesterday with the sale averaging a whopping £265.65 (+£65.66 on the year). Topping at £355, was the Champion pen of 10 from regular consignor Fiona Anderson, Oslcay, Wick who also took the 1st prize in the single half bred class, achieving £250 to D Coghill & Sons, Skinnet, Halkirk.
Strong averages were achieved across the board at the annual Show and Sale of Half Bred, North Country Cheviot Ewes and Store Lambs, kindly sponsored by DR Alexander & Son, which seen a total of 6,602 Ewe Lambs, Store & Prime lambs, Feeding Ewes & Rams sold to a busy ringside of buyers.
In the pre-sale show of ewe lambs ably judged by Ian Ross, Ankerville, Nigg Station, the champion pen of 10 Half-Bred Ewe Lambs and the winner of the Harry S Sleigh Perpetual Trophy was awarded to Fiona Anderson, Osclay which achieved £355 selling to J Elphinstone, Headitown Bonnykelly.
The first prize pen of 20 Half-Bred Ewe Lambs was awarded to D Coghill, Tofts of Tain, Castletown which went onto sell for £285.
In the North Country Cheviot section, champion single was awarded to William Campbell, The Maltings, Thurso and sold to £370 to A A Grant, Innergeille House, Kilrenny.
Champion pen of 10 of North Country Cheviot Ewe Lambs was from Messr T Sinclair, Reaster which sold for £240 to A Bremner, Lower Houstry, Halkirk.
Champion single in the any other breed section was awarded to a Texel from D Coghill Tofts of Tain and realised £250 to the judge.
The Champion pen of 10 in the any other breeds, went to Suffolk crosses from D N Campbell & Sons, Bardnaclavan Farm, Bridge of Westfield and sold for £170 to A W Frank & Son, Rennieshill, Newmachar.
Scott Chapman, Auctioneer at Aberdeen & Northern Marts said: “Ewe Lambs stole centre stage today with a strong average of £179.40 for all breeds achieved. The top price went to a North Country Cheviot Ewe Lamb from Alan Simpson, Cairnside, 36 Oldhall which realised £500 and sold to A A Grant, Innergeille House,
Fife. Store Lambs were very keenly bid for with a full ringside of buyers in attendance.”
