Three members of Aberdeen & Northern Marts livestock team have become the only three Scottish graduates to complete a renowned livestock auctioneering development programme this year.
Fraser Chapman, Gemma Duguid and Andrew Gunn recently completed their studies through Harper Adams University to each achieve a Certificate of Higher Education in Livestock Market Operations and Management. In addition, Gemma also received the MJ Thomson Award for the top graduating student from Scotland.

The course, which has been delivered since 2011, was developed in conjunction with the Livestock Auctioneers’ Association and the Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers in Scotland (IAAS). Candidates start by completing the University Foundation Certificate, which involves studying six modules over two years, followed by the Certificate of Higher Education comprising a further four modules over two years. Completion of the course also earns students Fellowship of the IAAS.
Based at Thainstone, Fraser plays a key role within the livestock team, selling weekly at the cast cow and bull sales and working closely with vendors and purchasers across the North East of Scotland and into Uist. His regular presence in the rostrum and the experience he is building week by week reflect both his commitment to the trade and the importance we place on developing the next generation within our livestock team.
At Caithness Livestock Centre, Andrew, a livestock canvasser, and Gemma, Assistant Manager, are firmly embedded in their local community, building long-standing relationships while supporting and delivering busy livestock sales. Their judgement, technical knowledge and day-to-day engagement with producers are fundamental in maintaining the service standards we provide our members and customers.
ANM Group Chief Executive Grant Rogerson commented: “Fraser, Gemma and Andrew continue a long and proud association ANM has with this course, and we are very proud of them and what they have achieved. The strength of any livestock business lies in the quality, professionalism and integrity of its people, and this is a good example of that in practice.”
Alan Hutcheon, President of the Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers in Scotland and Deputy Vice Chairman of ANM Group added: “It is vital that auction companies such as ANM invest in the next generation of the profession by developing the skills, standards and confidence needed to produce the auctioneers and appraisers of tomorrow, and the course at Harper Adams University provides an excellent way to encourage up-and-coming talent.”
