Balfour Baillie tops Thainstone Spectacular at £8,000

Balfour Baillie, Sebay view, Tankerness, Orkney topped the sale of Exhibition Cattle at Thainstone on Friday 21st of August, kindly sponsored by Blackadder’s Solicitors.
The 3rd prize February 2026 born Limousin Cross Heifer, scalling 330kgs achieved the top price of £8,000 selling to Susan and Allan Campbell, Alt na Craik, Corrow Farm, Lochgoilhead.
The second top price of the day went to the 2025 unhaltered champion from R & N Barclay, South Road, Insch. The July 2025 born Limousin cross heifer scalling 481kgs went onto sell for £7,800 to BMD Livestock, 2 Bogie Street, Huntly.
The Overall Spectacular Champion was awarded by judge, Stephen Taylor, Ochilmount, Bannockburn, Stirling, to a Limousin cross heifer from J Robertson & Co, Newton of Logierait, Pitlochry. The September 2025 born heifer, scalling 486kgs sold for the third top price of the day to Susan and Allan Campbell, Alt na Craik, Corrow Farm, Lochgoilhead for £7,500.
The 2nd prize haltered heifer, scalling 553kgs from Cally Harper, Sheep Park Farms, Bridge of Marnoch Huntly, was tapped out at £6,300 selling to David Blair, Littleinch Farm, Newport of Tay.
The 2026 born champion Limousin cross heifer from James S Baillie & Co, Sebay Farm, Tankerness, achieved the next top price of £5,000. The heifer scalling 384kgs sold to AJR Farms, Milton of Collieston, Ellon.
Two calves were cashed out at £4,000, the first was a 1st prize Limousin cross heifer from Georgia Fraser, Little Croy, Inverness selling to BT Kitson Butchers, 25 South Side, Hutton, Rudby, Yarm. The second, was the 2025 Reserve Champion awarded to a Limousin cross heifer from Balfour Baillie, Sebay View, selling to C Sinclair, Brewthin, Cullerlie, Skene.
In the bullock section, the 2026 born champion was awarded to J S Baillie & Co, Sebay Farm for their Limousin cross steer scalling 294kgs which sold for £3,200 to BMD Livestock, 2 Bogie Street, Huntly.
The reserve 2026 champion went to a Limousin cross steer from J Munro & Son, Invercharron Farm, Ardgay, scalling 314kgs which sold for £3,000 to Aileen Ritchie, Tamala, Burnside, Whitecairns.
The 2025 born bullock champion was awarded to a Limousin cross from Georgia Fraser, Little Croy, scalling 710kgs which sold for £3,100 to Ross Bros, Wardhead, Strichen. The reserve champion went to W Roberston & Son, Fodderletter, Tomintoul. The Limousin cross, scalling 469kgs sold for £2,800 to BT Kitson Butchers, 25 South Side, Hutton, Rudby, Yarm.
The annual event saw heifers average 8.847 per kg or £3,930 and bullocks level at 6.047 kg per kg or £2,579.17 per head.
In total 31 calves forward sold to the average 7.79 per kg or £3,407.10 (+£149.96 on the year).
