A record entry has been confirmed ahead of Aberdeen & Northern Marts’ three-day sheep fair at Caithness Livestock Centre, Quoybrae, which takes place from Thursday 17th to Saturday 19th September.
The event gets underway on Thursday 17th September with the Annual Show and Sale of Multi Breed Rams, held under the auspices of the Caithness Sheep Breeders Association and kindly sponsored by HRN Tractors.
A record entry of 250 rams and ram lambs are forward, comprising 147 Texels, 50 Suffolks and 53 Any Other Breeds, including Blue Texels, Dutch Spotted, Beltex and crosses. A further 13 MV-accredited gimmers are forward for sale, including 10 Texels and three Dutch Spotted which will be sold at the start of the evening.

The Texels will be judged by Peter Anderson, East Gate, East Burrafirth, with the Suffolks judged by John R Burgess, Lower House, Hillwell. Stephen Sutherland, Sibmister, Castletown, will judge the Any Other Breeds section. The show will begin at 4pm, followed by the sale at 6.30pm.
The sheep fair continues on Friday 18th September with the North Country Cheviot Sheep Society Show and Sale, featuring 122 North Country Cheviot rams and ram lambs, alongside 18 females. The event is kindly sponsored by Shearwell Data, with judging commencing at 8.30am and the sale at 10.30am.

Alan Cowens, Old Mill Farm, Philiphaugh, Selkirk, and Allister McNeill, 40 Taylorstown Road, Toomebridge, will judge the Shearlings and Ram Lambs sections. Lewis Gallier, The Sheiling, Daviot, and Jac George, Maerdy Uchaf, Talley, Llandello, will judge the Females and Groups.
Following the North Country Cheviot ram sale, attention will turn to the Show and Sale of 800 breeding gimmers, including Hill and Park Cheviot Gimmers, Cheviot Mules, Texels and Continental breeds.
The three-day event will conclude on Saturday 19th September with the annual Sale of All Classes of Breeding Ewes. Entries will include sheep from HISHA-accredited flocks, as well as consignments from Dunbeath, Forsinard, West Sutherland and across Caithness. Entries for Saturday’s sale close on Monday 14th September.
