A top price of £500 per head was paid for the champion pen of lambs at the Aberdeen Christmas Classic, held at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ Thainstone Centre on Tuesday.

The annual event, held in conjunction with the Aberdeen Fatstock Association and sponsored by Rapid Project Development (RPD), saw the top award go to Messrs Smith, Drumnahive, Kildrummy, Alford.

In total, 40 pairs of prime lambs averaged 364.8p per kg or £168.40.

Tapped out by judge Bill MacKinnon of Scotbeef, Inverurie, was a pair of home-bred, April-born Beltex cross lambs scaling 46kg. They sold to JB Penman Butchers, Crail, Anstruther.

The reserve pen, a pair of 55kg Beltex crosses from David Moir, Newmill, Home Farm Cairness, Fraserburgh, made £420 per head to IJ McIntosh Butchers, Fraserburgh.

David also stood champion in the butchers’ lambs with a pair of 48kg Beltex cross lambs which sold to Scotbeef, Inverurie, for £300 per head.

Taking reserve in the butchers’ lambs was Ronnie Wilkie, Tillyboy, Echt, with a pair of 44.5kg Beltex lambs which also sold to Scotbeef, Inverurie.

The Young Farmers’ championship was also won by David Moir, with a pair of 49kg Beltex cross lambs which sold for £250 to the same buyer.
